Sending a board to Cornwall, for example, adds cost and risks damaging a handcrafted surfboard. So, doing it all myself is both a necessity and a choice. But when it comes to money, well, that’s the tough part. 250 hours times my hourly rate? There’s no way I could charge 4k + for my time, plus materials. I’m currently hand-shaping an agave core SUP for a customer, and it’s been an intense process—a lot of work, but worth it for a sustainable, unique board. With 8 years of experience shaping foam (PU, EPS, traditional), taking on something this large, hollowing it out, gluing, and reshaping has been a true learning curve. I’ve enjoyed it, even with the challenges. The key to custom board building is working closely with the rider. This SUP is on the smaller side for a complete beginner, but I tailored it to fit the customer’s limited storage space. To ensure stability and buoyancy, I added volume throughout.
