I’m currently hand-shaping an agave core SUP for a customer, and it’s been an intense process—a lot of work, but worth it for a sustainable, unique board. With 8 years of experience shaping foam (PU, EPS, traditional), taking on something this large, hollowing it out, gluing, and reshaping has been a true learning curve. I’ve enjoyed it, even with the challenges. The key to custom board building is working closely with the rider. This SUP is on the smaller side for a complete beginner, but I tailored it to fit the customer’s limited storage space. To ensure stability and buoyancy, I added volume throughout. Working on this beautiful 6ft retro diamond tail for Tom. @sofacoplus . I spent my Monday laminating it with epoxy resin @resin.research and S-glass fiberglass—4 oz on the bottom and 6 oz on the deck. Tomorrow, I’ll be adding the @futuresfins boxes and leash plugs. Right now, I handle every aspect of my boards—shaping, laminating, sanding. But as I get busier, I know I’ll need to find a dedicated laminator who loves what they do. It’s all about recognizing that we can’t be experts at everything and sometimes need to delegate to those who are more skilled.
